Everything you need to know about hosting games, scoring big, and becoming the ultimate gaming trivia champion.
Contents
1. What is Level Up Trivia?
Level Up Trivia is a party trivia game built for gamers. One person hosts the game on their PC, and everyone else joins from any web browser — phones, tablets, laptops, whatever they have. No apps to download, no accounts to create.
The game features hundreds of questions about video games, spanning retro classics, modern AAA titles, indie gems, esports, gaming history, and more. It's designed for game nights, watch parties, Discord hangouts, or livestream entertainment.
Requirements:
- Host: Windows PC running the Level Up Trivia desktop application
- Players: Any device with a web browser (phone, tablet, laptop)
- Minimum players: 2 (but more fun with 4+)
- Internet: All devices need to be online (same network not required)
2. How to Host a Game
Download the Host App
Download Level Up Trivia for Windows from our website. Install and launch the application on your PC.
Configure Your Game
Choose your trivia categories, set the difficulty level, and pick how many rounds you want to play. You can mix categories for variety or focus on a specific topic.
Create a Room
Click "Create Room" to generate a unique 4-letter room code. This code is what your friends will use to join your game.
Share the Code
Share the room code with your friends via text, Discord, voice chat, or on stream. They visit play.appsolutebest.com/gamertrivia, enter the code and a nickname, and they're in.
Start Playing
Once everyone has joined, start the game. Questions appear on the host's screen while players answer on their own devices. Scores are tallied in real time.
Cast or share your host screen so players can see the questions. This works great on Discord screen share, a TV, or a projector at parties.
3. How to Join a Game
Joining is designed to be as frictionless as possible. No downloads, no accounts, no setup.
- Visit play.appsolutebest.com/gamertrivia on any browser
- Enter the 4-letter room code from the host
- Choose a nickname (use a fun nickname, not your real name)
- Tap "Join Game" — the game engine loads and you're connected
Quick join: Hosts can also share a direct link with the room code embedded: play.appsolutebest.com/gamertrivia/?room=ABCD. This pre-fills the room code so players only need to enter a nickname.
4. Scoring & Streaks
Level Up Trivia's scoring system rewards both accuracy and speed, with a streak mechanic that amplifies your score the more consecutive correct answers you get.
Base Scoring
Each correct answer earns base points. Faster answers earn more points — the quicker you answer correctly, the higher your score for that question. Wrong answers earn zero points and break your streak.
Streak Multipliers
Consecutive correct answers build a streak that multiplies your score:
| Streak | Multiplier | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 0-1 correct | 1x | Base score |
| 2 in a row | 1.5x | Score starts climbing |
| 3 in a row | 2x | Double points |
| 4+ in a row | 3x | Maximum multiplier — keep it going! |
A wrong answer resets your streak to zero. If you're unsure, it's sometimes better to guess than to skip — you have a chance at maintaining your streak, and a 25% chance on a four-option question isn't bad.
5. Trivia Categories
Level Up Trivia covers the full spectrum of gaming knowledge. Here are the main category groups:
Retro & Classic
NES, SNES, Genesis, arcade games, and the golden age of gaming.
Modern AAA
PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC blockbusters from recent years.
Indie Games
Beloved indie titles from Hollow Knight to Celeste to Stardew Valley.
Esports
Competitive gaming history, players, teams, and tournament moments.
Gaming History
Console wars, industry milestones, and the evolution of gaming.
Soundtracks & Audio
Iconic game music, voice actors, and sound design.
Hosts can select specific categories or mix multiple categories for a varied game. Difficulty levels adjust the complexity of questions — Easy focuses on well-known games, while Hard digs into deep gaming knowledge.
6. Tournament Mode
For competitive gatherings, Level Up Trivia supports bracket-style tournament play. This is great for larger groups, gaming events, or stream-organized competitions.
How Tournaments Work
- The host sets up a tournament bracket with the desired number of players
- Players are paired into rounds (or grouped for larger heats)
- Each round is a standard trivia game — the top scorer(s) advance
- Elimination continues until a champion is crowned
Tournament Tips
- Use mixed categories to test broad knowledge
- Set harder difficulty for later rounds to increase the challenge
- For large groups, run preliminary heats of 6-8 players, then advance the top 2-3 from each heat
- Keep rounds to 10-15 questions to maintain energy and pace
7. Badges & Achievements
Earn badges as you play. Badges track your accomplishments across games and give you something to strive for beyond just winning.
Example Badges
- First Win — Win your first trivia game
- Streak Master — Hit a 10-question answer streak
- Speed Demon — Answer 5 questions in under 3 seconds each
- Genre Expert — Score 90%+ in a single category
- Social Butterfly — Play in 10 different rooms
- Perfect Game — Answer every question correctly in a full round
- Trivia Veteran — Answer 500 total questions
Badges are tracked per nickname. Using the same nickname across sessions lets you accumulate progress.
8. Streaming & Content Creation
Level Up Trivia is built with streamers in mind. The host application runs on desktop and is easy to capture with OBS, Streamlabs, or any screen capture software.
Streaming Setup
- Run the host application on your streaming PC
- Add it as a window or game capture source in OBS
- Share your room code on stream for viewers to join
- Viewers join from their phones or second screens
Best Practices for Streamers
- Start with a brief explanation for new viewers — the join process is simple
- Display the room code prominently (pin it in chat or use a text overlay)
- Keep rounds manageable — 15-20 questions works well for stream pacing
- Mix easy and hard categories to keep it engaging for all skill levels
- Use the direct join link (
?room=XXXX) in your stream description or chat commands
Level Up Trivia is free to use for streaming and content creation. No special license or attribution required. Just have fun!
9. Troubleshooting
I can't join a room
- Double-check the room code — it's 4 letters, case-insensitive
- Make sure the host has created the room and it's still active
- Check your internet connection
- Try refreshing the page and entering the code again
The game is slow or laggy
- Close other browser tabs to free up memory
- Make sure you have a stable internet connection
- On mobile, close background apps
The host app won't start
- Ensure you're running Windows 10 or later
- Check that no firewall is blocking the application
- Try running the application as administrator
Players are disconnecting
- This usually indicates network issues on the player's end
- Players on unstable mobile data may experience drops
- Wi-Fi is recommended over cellular for the best experience

10. Tips & Strategy
For Players
- Read the full question before looking at answers — rushed reads lead to misclicks
- Speed matters but accuracy matters more — a correct answer always beats a fast wrong one
- Protect your streak — if you're on a hot streak, take an extra second to think before answering
- Don't be afraid to guess if you're not sure — a 25% chance at maintaining your streak is worth it
- Pay attention to category trends — if you notice a theme, it might help with upcoming questions
For Hosts
- Mix categories to keep things fresh and give everyone a chance to shine
- Start with easier rounds to warm up, then increase difficulty
- For parties, keep rounds short (10-15 questions) and take breaks between rounds
- Consider doing themed game nights — retro only, indie only, etc.
- Use tournaments for competitive groups, standard mode for casual fun
